It wasn’t merely a mindless spectacle of hard-bodied beauties parading down center stage. In the presence of hundreds of awestruck spectators, 67 sensational fitness women from all over the U.S. gathered in Tampa, Florida, to showcase their high-energy fitness routines, svelte physiques, and athletic prowess in the prestigious 1998 Women’s Tri-Fitness Championship, held May 15th & 16th. In preparation for this event, these fabulously fit women underwent countless hours of toiling in the gym, training on the obstacle course, and creating and rehearsing routines, all of which require attention to the finest details.Their efforts are certainly deserving of the respect and admiration which the sport of fitness is presently striving to obtain. With participants hailing from all types of fitness and occupational backgrounds, variety was certainly not lacking.
Professionals and amateurs alike competed in grand style, in this quintessential fitness event which featured three rounds: fitness routine, physique, and obstacle course.The overall Women’s Tri-Fitness champion was none other than Florida’s own Kelly Gignilliat, one of the world’s greatest fitness athletes. Placing first in both the fitness and obstacle course rounds, Kelly captivated the audience with her incredibly choreographed moves. In the grueling, 150-yard obstacle course, she blew past the competition, finishing with an incredible time of 54.25 seconds. Trekking all the way from Boise, Idaho, stunning beauty Torrie Wilson mesmerized the crowd and judges by winning the Physique round with perfect 10’s. Suzi Hunt of Orlando, swept the combined “Dual Fitness” award, which consisted of Fitness Routine and Physique combined scoring. The winner in “Dual Obstacle” was first time competitor Cynthia Berkeley of Fort Myers, who put on a stellar performance by placing 3rd in both physique and obstacle course rounds. What made this past year’s event so successful? This Women’s Tri-Fitness competition sought to distinguish itself by coming through in the areas where other fitness competitions failed. . Over 80 trophies as well as medals and plaques, were distributed among the competitors. Well qualified judges presided over the event, and all of the rounds began on time, as promised. The women were extremely pleased with the organization of the event. |
